History

EnlargeA grade II listed building, most likely the main house was built circa 1690. The extensions on both sides of the one property as it originally was were built circa 1730 as a result of additions to the family numbers! TANYCASTELL was the birthplace of John Jones, Talysarn; one of Wales’ most prominent Calvinist Methodist preachers (1796-1857). A marble monument in his honour is located at the drive to the house, and a further slate memorial is located on the side wall of 1 Tanycastell. A measure of the influence, status and the respect afforded to John Jones is the vivid picture given of his funeral:

He died on 16 August, 1857, and was buried at the parish graveyard in Llanllyfni [Arfon]. In the funeral procession were 8 doctors, 65 ministers, 70 deacons, 200 choristers and around 4,000 others with a further 2,000 who joined en route.

Three of his sisters emigrated to Cambria, Wisconsin (USA) and interest in the family tree remains to this day. Over the years some of John Jones’ descendants have visited TANYCASTELL. If you are a family member we’d love to hear from you.

Located across the main road (A470) is the historic castle of Llywelyn the Great, built between 1210-1240. It is one of the few remaining Welsh built castles and can be visited daily between 9am - 6pm. Looking south from the castle you will notice a small rocky knoll lined with trees – this apparently was the birthplace of Llywelyn. In Dolwyddelan itself is the Church of St. Gwyddelan built circa 15th century, the name taken from an Irish saint who visited the area in the 7th century.
